What Does the Antibody Test Look For?

The majority of patients who recover from Coronavirus have been found to produce antibodies; initially an IgM antibody and then an IgG antibody during the recovery phase. The detection IgG antibody shows whether a person has previously been infected by SARS-Cov-2.

The IgG Antibody

The IgG antibody in other viruses is found to be protective against future infection as these antibodies stay in the system as a form of defence. Whilst SARS-Cov-2 is a relatively new virus, scientists are working globally to establish and define the immunity status following an infection.

Key areas of ongoing research:
  • If an individual has a positive IgG result following SARS-Cov-2, will they either fully or partially protected from future infection?
  • How long the protective immunity may last following infection?

When Can The Covid 19 Antibody Test be Done?

Testing should be undertaken 17 days or more following exposure or onset of symptoms.

The immune system reacts to the SARS Cov-2 by producing antibodies from a few days to 2 weeks and beyond. Specific IgG antibodies are produced at the later stages of the infection to SARS Cov-2.

The persistence of IgG antibodies allows the identification of people who have been infected by SARS -Cov-2.The test development relating to SARS-Cov-2 is rapidly evolving and The Mews Practice is in constant communication with updates from the approved laboratories used.

The Covid- 19 results will be forwarded to you by way of a ‘certificate of testing’ with a full explanation of the results. The clinicians at The Mews Practice will also ring or video call the patient if the results are positive.

How Accurate is the Antibody Test?

Medical tests are usually measured for accuracy by looking at two criteria –
Specificity and Sensitivity. The higher the percentage, the more accurate the result.

The test is 100% Specific
A test that has 100% specificity will identify 100% of patients who do not have the disease.

The test is 97.5 % Sensitive
A test that is 100% sensitive will identify all patients who have the disease.

All results are interpreted in context of the clinical symptoms. It has been recognised that there can be weak or delayed responses in patients who have conditions where the immune system is compromised.

The Mews Practice can accommodate testing for businesses and offer corporate discounts based on numbers. We can also offer offsite testing with full compliance to Personal Protective Requirements. Please email or call for details.
